Empathy and Rage part 2
August 28, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. Online and in-person
Rev. Dr. Matthew Johnson

Our longing to be seen and loved can turn to rage – towards others and towards ourselves – when we don’t have that core need met, or when we see the injustice and pettiness of the world.  How do we deal with the rage in our heart?  How do we have empathy for ourselves?  We dive into the heart and soul today.
Order of Service

We will Share the Plate with Human Library
The Human Library Greater Rockford is a project of the Racial & Economic Justice Team of our Unitarian Universalist church, Rockford. We work in collaboration with Human Library, Denmark and host HL events in Rockford at our public libraries and educational institutions like RVC & RU and other organizations in our geographic area. HL events are opportunities for folks/”readers” to sit down and hear a human “book”, someone sharing their story. The reader can also ask questions helping to increase their understanding of someone they may not have met otherwise and in this way break down some prejudices they may have had about that person or people with that identity, such as a “Refugee” or a “Black man” or “Vietnam Veteran” or “Alcoholic” or…We have about 30 “books”, volunteers from our church and the larger Rockford community who have made this endeavor enough of a success that we are now recognized by Human Library, Denmark as a “Book Depot” in our area. Funds donated help us to expand and spread the word about our events that we hope help to make this a more compassionate & just world, one meaningful interaction at a time. Do stop by our next HL event at RPL, East Branch on 9/17 from 11-3 and enjoy “reading” a human “book”! For more information please go to https://humanlibrary.org

Wonderful Wednesday, Sept. 7th, 2022

6 PM. <– Note new time!!!  Wonderful Wednesdays this year will be at SIX P.M. and end by 7:30.

“Interrupting Microaggressions.”  The #1 request from you for anti-racism and anti-oppression learning was how to interrupt microaggressions in yourself and others.  What are they and how do we know? How do we correct ourselves or others when they make them, whether we experience them ourselves or as a “bystander” — hopefully, without escalating and in a way that helps, rather than destroys, a relationship?  We’ll look at interrupting microaggressions around race, culture, gender, sexuality, and disability.  Rev. Matthew will share key insights, practices, and habits that help do this.  Feel free to bring friends/and family — open to the public.
