10 Big Ideas: Attachment Theory
September 18, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. Online and in-person
Rev. Dr. Matthew Johnson

The first of 10 sermons between now and June about 10 big ideas I’ve learned in 15 years as your minister.  Attachment Theory has revolutionized my understanding of the ways that people connect with family, partners, friends, and community.  It’s a very simple and powerful way of thinking of how we seek and manage our attachments with others.  Come learn about it, and how understanding yourself and others can make your attachments more rich and healthy.

RAMP CIL
We will Share the Plate with RAMP
RAMP is a non-profit, non-residential Center for Independent Living (CIL) that emulates the Independent Living Philosophy with a mission to build an inclusive community that encourages individuals with disabilities to reach their full potential. RAMP services enrich individual’s lives. Oftentimes we meet with individuals who have experienced a traumatic or life-changing event (i.e. child recently diagnosed with a disability, accident resulting in permanent disability, etc.). These life-changing events can leave an individual reeling, as well as their family, and not knowing where to turn or what to do. It is this grassroots effort and philosophy to “meet someone where they are at” that drives this organization.

Belonging Discussion Wonderful Wednesday, September 21 at 6pm
A couple years ago, an initiative was launched to create a culture of belonging in Rockford.  Belonging is foundational for doing anything together.

Organized by NICNE (No IL Center for Nonprofit Excellence) with consultation from john powell, who founded the Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkely; three members of our church are involved, Billie Callahan, Shiraz Tata & Ellyn Ahmer.  There are task force work groups with events & activities planned.  Two employers are co-creating a culture of belonging within the workplace, Collins Aerospace & the Rockford Park District   Hear more about the effort at the Wonderful Wednesday on September 21 at 6 pm.

Invitations Matter
“The biggest reason people come back to church is that they are invited.
One sincere, guilt-free invitation can make all the difference for those
who simply got out of the habit during the pandemic or those looking for a life change.”

-Lewis Center for Church Leadership
We are so grateful to Duane Wilke for bringing Human Library to UU-C, Rockford and for all the effort he has put into making this a success in the Rockford area, touching many lives. Do stop by the last HL in Rockford that Duane will be at from 11-3 tomorrow. We are glad to have some wonderful “books” from our church and larger community there. You can feel free to stop for 20 minutes to interact with one person sharing their story or stay as long as you like!
